Used book trade-ins are temporarily suspended. Check back for information on when trade-in hours will resume. The used book area is currently closed to the public, but you can browse our used book cart on the sidewalk, and we will be happy to bring titles upstairs for you.
Did you know that we trade and sell used books? Head down the flight of stairs next to the Children's desk to check out the selection!
Frequently Asked Questions:
When is the Used Book Cellar (UBC) open for browsing?
The UBC is open during regular store hours, but is closed for browsing during author events. (We will be happy to look for a title after an event and place it on hold for you.)
When can I bring in my used books?
We accept trade-ins most Saturdays from 12pm to 3pm. It is always a good idea to call and check before coming over with your books. Please do not drop off books, as we do not have storage space -- books dropped off will not be considered for trade in. Please note that we suspend our trade-in service during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, and for special events such as July Jubilation.
What will I receive for my books?
We issue store credit for up to 20% of the original price of books we accept depending on condition.
What kind of books do you take?
We're not picky . . . we're selective! Our inventory is large and our storage space is small, so we can't take everything that's brought to us. For starters, we do not accept hardcovers, only paperbacks (although we may make an exception for a current bestseller). Here are our current wants (as of spring 2019):
- In adult books: Fiction, Mystery, Historical Fiction, Biography/Memoir, History & Culture, Drama, and Poetry.
- In children's books: Beginning Readers and Chapter Books, Intermediate/Middle Grade books.
We do not take textbooks, business books, romance novels, home repair and decorating guides, cookbooks, travel guides, other types of "how to" books, children's board books, computer guides, health or diet/fitness books, or "coffee table" art and photography books.
How many used books may I bring in? What about condition?
In order to be fair to all trade-in customers, we will review no more than about 50-60 books per customer or family each week. This is about the size of two small boxes or two grocery bags. Books must be in good condition -- free of underlining, highlighting, and water damage. Books must be free of all stickers, all pages should be securely bound, and the spine unbroken.
If you have any questions about bringing in used books, please call us at 781-431-1160.
Please be sure to pack books in small boxes or bags for safe transportation down the stairs!
