ABOUT THE IMPERFECTS
In the captivating, emotional new novel from the author of The Bookshop of Yesterdays, a family’s discovery of a priceless inheritance leads them on a pursuit for the truth that transforms their lives in unexpected ways—pitched as The Nest meets Curtis Sittenfeld.
The Millers are far from perfect. Beck, once a promising law student, is drowning in debt after being expelled; Jake, a failed Hollywood screenwriter, is reeling from news of his girlfriend’s unexpected pregnancy; Ashley, a stay-at-home mom, learns her husband is about to be arrested for fraud; Deborah, their estranged mother, is rebounding from a string of botched romances. When their mysterious, eccentric matriarch, Helen, passes away, the Millers find themselves under one roof for the first time in years, forced to confront old resentments and betrayals. But their lives are about to change when they find a secret inheritance hidden among Helen’s possessions—the Florentine Diamond, a 137-carat yellow gemstone that went missing from the Austrian Empire a century ago.
Desperate to learn how one of the world’s most elusive diamonds ended up in Helen's bedroom, they begin investigating her past only to realize how little they know about their brave, resilient grandmother. It isn’t long before news breaks that the missing diamond has resurfaced, turning the Millers’ world upside down as people begin to fight them for ownership. As the Millers race to determine whether they are the rightful heirs to the diamond and the fortune it promises, they uncover a past more tragic and powerful than they ever could have imagined, forever changing their connection to their heritage and each other.
Inspired by the true story of the real, still-missing Florentine Diamond, The Imperfects illuminates the unbreakable bonds of family and how sometimes discovering the truth of the past is the only way to better the future.
